2400 years ago, the famous Greek philosopher Plato believed that light beams emitted from our eyes allowed us to see. The Ancient Greeks believed that the eye produced outward flowing ‘emanations’ just like the light of a lantern.
We now know that the opposite is true (called intromission). Vision occurs when light rays reflected from the world travel through our cornea and lens to reach our retina. The retina then converts light rays into neurological signals which travel down our optic nerves and into the occipital cortex of our brain giving us the experience of vision.
