Cataract

What is a Cataract?

  • Cataracts occur when the natural lens within the eye becomes cloudy.
  • Common symptoms include blurred vision and increased glare.
  • When cataracts affect vision they can be surgically removed.

Cataract Surgery

  • Cataract surgery is typically performed as a day procedure under local anaesthetic with some sedation.
  • The cloudy lens is removed and an artificial lens is inserted to improve vision and reduce the need for glasses.
  • Routine cataract surgery takes around 10 to 15 minutes and has a high success rate.

Intraocular Lens Options

  • When cataract surgery is performed a replacement lens is implanted into the eye.
  • A number of different intraocular lens options are available to use for cataract surgery.
  • Sunshine Coast Eye and Retina specialises in the latest intraocular lens technology allowing for a personalised choice of lens for each patient. Lens options include:
    • Single focus lenses
    • Extended depth of focus lenses
    • Multifocal lenses
    • Monovision
